Got the call from a bakery in Manhattan: the ice machine fills overnight, then quits somewhere in the middle of service. By the afternoon rush there’s nothing in the bin.
Pulled it out and found a Manitowoc UYF0140A-161B undercounter unit. R404A, 115V, 6.77 ounces of charge. A small machine doing a lot of work in a tight spot.

Overnight it’s cool and quiet in the kitchen and the machine is fine. Once the ovens are running and the room warms up, it stops making ice. That pattern points at one thing before anything else: the machine can’t reject heat.

On an air-cooled unit like this, the condenser fan doesn’t just run all the time. A fan cycling switch watches head pressure and brings the fan on when the pressure climbs. When that switch stops closing, the fan never starts, head pressure keeps climbing, and the unit either makes soft hollow cubes or shuts itself down to protect the compressor.
Cool room, low pressure, no fan needed, machine works. Hot room, pressure climbs, fan should start, doesn’t. That’s your afternoon outage.
Fitted an access tee, put gauges on it, confirmed the pressure was going where it should and the fan wasn’t responding. Replaced the switch with a Supco SFC210275, brazed clean, leak-checked, and watched it through a full harvest cycle before packing up.

Here’s the part worth knowing: that switch is one of the cheapest components in the whole machine. The compressor it protects is not. Every hour that unit ran with head pressure climbing was an hour of wear nobody was paying for yet.

An ice machine that works at 6am and dies at 2pm isn’t a machine that’s “getting old.” It’s a machine telling you exactly what’s wrong, in a pattern, if somebody’s listening.
