Inside this walk-in, the unit cooler was full of ice: on the coil, in the housing, and hanging below it.

It’s a Russell UEL2-304: medium temp, R-404A, two 3/4 HP fan motors, and electric defrost heaters that the plate rates at 23.5 amps on 208 volts.

On a coil like this, frost is normal, and the defrost heaters clear it on a schedule. If the heaters don’t get called, or one leg is open, frost stays. Frost becomes ice, and the ice insulates the coil until the fans are just pushing air past a block.

Once it looks like this, nothing can be tested properly until it’s thawed. After that, the defrost circuit is where we start.

If you see ice, not frost, on a walk-in coil, move what you can to another box and call before the product warms.
