
Walk-in wasn’t holding. Staff had already noticed the coil was “a bit frosty.” This is what “a bit frosty” turned out to mean.

That’s not frost. That’s an evaporator that has been losing the argument for a long time.
Here’s the thing about ice on an evaporator: the ice is never the fault. Ice is what happens after the fault. And the instinct — chip it off, run it, see how it goes — guarantees you’ll be back, because whatever put it there is still there.
Ice builds when the coil runs colder than it should for longer than it should. That happens when the system can’t complete its cycle properly, and one of the most common reasons for that is a problem at the other end of the system entirely — outside, at the condenser.

Which is where this one was. A failed condenser fan motor — a Weiguang YWF4E-500S, 220V, 0.77A.
When that fan stops turning, the condenser can’t dump heat. Head pressure climbs, the system stops behaving the way it was designed to, and the symptom shows up thirty feet away on the evaporator as ice. Anyone looking only at the iced coil is looking at the wrong end of the machine.

Motor replaced, coil cleared properly rather than chipped at, system recovered and recharged, then run through a full cycle before we left.

That last part matters. Plenty of walk-in “repairs” end the moment the ice is gone and the box starts pulling down. That looks like a fix for about a week.
If your evaporator is icing, don’t chip it. Ice is a symptom with a cause, and the cause is usually somewhere you aren’t looking.
