A townhouse where every floor needed to be its own climate. Four indoor heads, condensers grouped together on the roof, one system that has to keep all of them happy at once.

Putting the outdoor units on the roof solves a real problem in a townhouse — there’s no yard to give up and no neighbour to annoy — but it moves the difficulty upstairs. Longer line runs, more elevation between indoor and outdoor, and every one of those runs has to be right or the zone at the end of it never performs.

This is the step that separates a finished install from a switched-on one. Gauges go on, the charge gets verified against what the system actually needs for its line length, and every zone gets run and checked individually.

Multi-zone systems hide their problems well. An undercharged system with four heads doesn’t fail — it just quietly underperforms in the room furthest from the outdoor unit, usually the top floor, usually in August. The homeowner assumes that room “runs warm.” It doesn’t. It’s being starved.

So each head gets driven through its own cycle, on its own controller, and watched. Not one zone tested and the rest assumed.

The result is what the homeowner actually wanted: each room holding its own setpoint, independently, without one floor stealing capacity from another.
