The call

A kitchen that feeds a nursing home cannot lose a freezer. The call was a two-door reach-in freezer creeping up in temperature, day after day, with nothing obviously wrong from the outside.

What we found

The box is a Continental Refrigerator model 2F, a commercial reach-in freezer on 115 volts, single phase, R-404A with a 15-ounce charge. The plate rates the condensing unit at 7.9 amps running, 51 amps locked rotor, and the electric defrost circuit at 9.6 amps.

Behind the grille sits the defrost timer, and this one was the mechanical kind: a small clock motor turning a dial with trip pins, the design that has been in reach-ins for fifty years. The clock motor had stopped, which left the timer sitting in the run position. No defrost, ever. The coil iced a little more each day until the fans were pushing air through a snowbank and the box could no longer hold.

The work, in order

  1. Mechanical timer removed and replaced with an Intermatic electronic defrost timer, solid-state switching with a 24-hour dial that can still be read on site.
  2. Timer set to four defrosts a day.
  3. Coil thawed. The freezer was back to temperature overnight.
  4. Two days later, back in the same kitchen for the reach-in refrigerator next to it, a Hoshizaki RH2-SSB. Same check, same age of timer: replaced before it could fail on its own schedule.
  5. Condenser coil on that box cleaned while the grille was off.
  6. Product zone measured with our own thermo-hygrometer rather than the dial on the door.

What this means if you manage the building

A defrost timer is a cheap part with an expensive failure, and it fails silently: the box just gets warmer. In a kitchen where the boxes were all bought together, when one timer goes the rest are close behind, so the second visit was planned rather than waited for. For a facility that cannot lose a freezer, that is the whole point: same-age components get done together, on the kitchen’s schedule, not the equipment’s.
